Description: Founded in 1987, Caracole Inc. was the first housing agency in the Tri-State for people living with HIV/AIDS. The first housing unit, located in Clifton, housed 4 clients and was essentially a safe haven for individuals with an AIDS diagnosis to be cared for until they passed away. Since that time, the disease and the diagnosis have changed drastically. During the mid-1990?s, the availability of new medications caused a significant change in how patients were managed. Since 2000, increasing research and medication improvements caused the mortality rate for those diagnosed HIV+ to decline. In response to those factors, Caracole now provides direct care services and housing to people with HIV/AIDS and their families along a continuum of housing which includes three comprehensive programs.
